Power Generator Ohio?

David asked:

I’m looking to buy a Honda Power Generator. What size do you all think is necessary to power a house?

What you need to do is figure what you really need to run on an emergency basis. lights, refrigerator, heating blower motor, and size the generator for that load. A generator large enough to power your house would be huge and cost prohibitive.

    magiccha has a good point.

I live in Hurricane country. One thing to think of is why you will need a generator. I assume since you are in Ohio that Ice storms would cause your worst power outage.

You can power your whole house with about a 10KW, but have you priced the Honda’s that are that big? Also gas may be hard the come buy if the gas stations are without power too.

The route most of us take in the south is having a 3-5kw that is fuel effecient. This way you can run your fridge and freezer, lights, TV and a portable heater (or a cheap window ac in the bedroom if you have a power loss in the summertime).

I use a 5500 Watt Generator for backup power to my house. It powers the well pump, furnace, fridge, freezer, microwave oven, lights, television, computer, etc. The house is quite comfortable, all considered, not factoring the noise…
You should consider installing a transfer panel as well.
