Which wires go where?
sillyme:-) asked:
Portable Generator Needs to be able to hookup to heatpump during emergency outage; generator has 4 @120v outlets and 1@ 240. Can I wire 240 generator outlet into heatpump, during blackouts, and how do I ? which wires go where? I have insured enough wattage in the generator to run heatpump. Just need to know how to wire it.

If your heat pump is 240 V. Buy 2 – 240V receptacles and 2 – 240 V plugs. Turn off the power and cut the wire that feeds the heat pump. Install one receptacle on the panel end of the wire and a plug on the heat pump side of the wire that you cut. Now plug the heat pump in turn the power on and everything should be normal. If the power goes out simply unplug the heat pump and plug it into the generator. You will need a special plug for the generator end of a extension cord, the same size wire or larger than is servicing the heat pump and a 240 receptacle on the other end end of your emergency heat pump extension cord .Now when the power goes out simply unplug the heat pump and plug it into the ext. cord and the other end into the 240V connection on the generator and away you go. The whole thing should not cost more that 200.00 or less. Good Luck
